The mother of "balloon boy" Falcon Heene admits she and her husband lied to authorities about their son floating away in a homemade balloon, according to a new court document.

Mayumi Heene told a sheriff's investigator last Saturday that she and her husband, Richard, knew all along that Falcon, 6, was hiding in the family's Colorado home while police and other rescuers chased the flying saucer-shaped balloon, believing the boy was trapped inside, according to a search warrant affidavit released Friday.

The affidavit states the parents planned the hoax for about two weeks and that the helium balloon was constructed especially for the alleged stunt.

"The motive for the fabricated story was to make the Heene family more marketable for future media interest," wrote investigator Robert Hefferman. "She and Richard had instructed their three children to lie to authorities as well as the media regarding the hoax."

The Oct. 15 drama dominated television networks, which followed the progress of the runaway balloon as it drifted thousands of metres into the atmosphere before making a soft landing three hours later and 80 kilometres away from the family's Fort Collins home, outside Denver.

Falcon was found hiding in a cardboard box in the attic of the home's garage.

The story began to fall apart when the family appeared soon after on CNN. During the appearance, Richard Heene, an inventor and storm-chaser, asked his son why he didn't come out of the attic when his name was called.

"You guys said that, hmm, we did this for the show," said Falcon.

Richard Heene said he had "no idea" why his son answered in that fashion, and denied it was a hoax.

Police have said they plan to charge the parents with conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and attempting to influence a public servant, as well as a misdemeanour of filing a false police report. No charges have yet been laid.

Authorities will also seek reimbursement of the cost of the rescue, which could run to hundreds of thousands of dollars. At one point it included a plan to dangle a rescuer from a helicopter to snatch the boy from the balloon.

Sheriff: Balloon Boy Family Made Deal with Media Outlet PDF Print E-mail

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Aldernen says a media outlet may have played a role in the Heene family's balloon hoax, according to The Associated Press.

Documents show a media outlet made a deal to pay the Heene family, Aldernen told the AP. He did not name the outlet in question, but he says the organization is in an industry that blurs "the line between entertainment and news."

Wife Swap co-star: Richard Heene "had the mind of a mad scientist"

It's unclear whether the agreement was signed before or after the balloon incident or whether the outlet in question was a conspirator in the stunt. If the outlet was involved, however, it could also face charges.

On top of the criminal charges Richard and Mayumi Heene are expected to face, People reported Tuesday that the Heenes are now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"This is unusual," Mike Fergus, a spokesperson for the FAA in Washington state, told the magazine. "But we investigate any air incident. The investigation is solely focusing on if we had any violations of our regulatory authority or regulations."

Fergus said the FAA could only file civil charges against the Heenes if there was a violation during the balloon's two-hour flight.

Aldernen previously stated that the Heenes could face charges for conspiracy, attempting to influence a public servant, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and false reporting to authorities. Charges have yet to be filed.

Sheriff: Balloon Boy a 'Hoax' PDF Print E-mail

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden says they have evidence that the balloon epic was a "hoax" and a "publicity stunt" to promote a new tv show.

Alderden says they plan on filing charges against Richard and Mayumi Heene soon -- one of which would be contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which is a felony. The other charges could be conspiracy, false reporting and attempt to influence an officer.

The most significant charges they face could result in a 2-5 year sentence.

The kids will probably not face charges, Alderden says, because of their age. Alderden says Child Protective Servics has been notified and will be conducting an investigation.

Alderden says the hoax was a "planned event for two weeks."

Alderden said that if the charges do go forward, they will seek restitution for all the expenses the county incurred.

He did not set a time frame for when arrests would be made.
